Haka Action begins with a discussion on the powerful role of performing arts in preserving and revitalising culture, history, and identity in communities worldwide. Participants are introduced to traditional Māori Performing Arts (Kapa Haka) and its central role in Māori community life in New Zealand (Aotearoa).
They learn that each haka—one element of Kapa Haka—has a unique history, meaning, and purpose, including Celebration & Welcome, Tribute & Mourning, and Ceremonial & Storytelling. The concept of Wairua, the spiritual essence within all living things, is explored to highlight haka as a profound spiritual expression. Participants also gain an understanding of the significance of various postures, movements, and facial expressions used in haka to convey emotion, pride, and energy.
The group is then guided through the process of learning a haka, both face-to-face (Kanohi ki te Kanohi) and through video demonstrations. Since haka is deeply rooted in expression and storytelling, emphasis is placed on accurately learning the words, pronunciation, and meaning. As they practise the specific actions and facial expressions, they are reminded of the importance of respect (mana). The experience culminates in a powerful and uplifting group dance and vocal performance of a Haka
